Today’s stories, read the way a printed paper intended
The Newspaper is a small online paper that favors stories worth lingering over to breaking-news alerts. Each week, across five sections—News, Opinion, Features, Culture, and Business—we publish original reporting and carefully considered writing.
From the bold nameplate and column rules to the single, straight column of text, we want to keep the feeling of unfolding a newspaper, even on a screen. We make news with an ending: a set amount to read, and then you can put it down.
Our Principles
Only what we have verified
We write only what we have confirmed ourselves. When we get something wrong, we correct it prominently and explain what changed and why.
For our readers
We write for readers, not advertisers. Stories and advertising are always clearly separated.
Writing you finish
We aim to write pieces you read to the end, not to write more. We choose stories that last over quick alerts.
The People Behind the Paper
Editorial Desk
Page Editing
We select and shape each day’s news as if it were a single printed page. We aim for stories that last over quick alerts, and stories you finish over a great many stories.
Julia Han
Columnist
Writes about culture and everyday life. She is drawn to small urban communities, people who read and write, and old objects, and on weekends she hosts a reading group at her neighborhood bookstore.
Michael Jung
Reporter
Covers the economy and society, looking for the human stories behind the numbers. He spent ten years at a local paper and still gets a printed newspaper every day.
Tips and Submissions
If you have a good story, send it to the Editorial Desk. A reporter will verify every tip before it becomes a story, and the desk reads each submission and edits it to fit the page.
